Wall Insulation in Ottawa

An attic is a lid. The walls are four elevations, and in a long Ottawa winter they lose heat across every one of them.

Open Walls Are the Cheap Moment

If the studs are open — a renovation, an addition, a new build, a gutted room — this is the least expensive wall insulation will ever be. Every cavity is reachable, every penetration can be sealed, and foam can be applied to the full depth of the bay in one visit.

Once drywall is on, the same work costs several times as much and involves drilling and patching instead. If you are planning work that opens a wall, that is the moment to deal with it.

Walls That Are Already Closed

Plenty of older Ottawa housing was built before cavity insulation was routine, and those walls are now finished on both sides. That does not mean opening them up. Foam or dense-pack material can be installed through small access holes which are then patched, so the wall stays finished.

The honest caveat is the patching. In painted drywall a patch can be made effectively invisible once repainted. Under vinyl or timber siding that is removed and replaced, usually invisible. In brick or stucco it is matched as closely as the material allows but may stay faintly visible. We tell you which case your house is before you commit.

Which Foam for a Wall

In a standard stud bay the depth available is fixed, so the product decides how much R-value fits in it. Closed cell gives the highest R per inch and is the choice where depth is tight or moisture is a factor. Open cell covers more area per dollar and suits deeper assemblies and interior partitions where sound matters.

Whatever goes in, the sealing matters as much as the material. A cavity full of insulation with an unsealed top plate still leaks.

How it runs

Insulating an open wall

  1. After rough-in sign-off

Electrical, plumbing and mechanical are inspected first. Insulating before that means tearing foam out when an inspector needs access.

  2. Seal the penetrations

Top plates, service holes and the junctions that leak. This is reachable now and effectively unreachable later.

  3. Fill to the quoted depth

The written scope names the material and the installed depth for each area, and that is what goes in.

  4. Walk it before drywall

We check the whole run while the cavity is open, because once board is on nobody can verify any of it.

Wall questions

What Ottawa homeowners ask

Can you insulate walls without opening them?

Yes, through small access holes that are then patched, so the wall stays finished. We check what is already in the cavity first, because injecting on top of wet or compacted material is not an improvement.

Will I see where the holes were?

In painted drywall, effectively no once repainted. Under vinyl or timber siding that is removed and replaced, usually no. In brick or stucco the patch is matched as closely as the material allows but may stay faintly visible. We say which applies before you commit.

We are renovating. When should you come?

After rough-in sign-off and before drywall. That window is when insulating is straightforward and inexpensive, and it closes quickly.

Is it worth doing the walls if the attic is already done?

Often yes. The attic is usually the biggest single loss, but it is one surface. The walls are four, and on an older house with empty cavities they are a large share of what you are losing.

Which foam goes in a wall?

It depends on the depth available and whether moisture is a factor. Closed cell gives more R per inch and suits tight or damp assemblies; open cell covers more area per dollar in deeper ones. The estimate names which goes where.

Open walls, or walls you cannot open?

Either way we will assess the assembly and put the material, the depth and the method in writing.
