Why insulation matters in Ontario
Spray Foam Insulation in Ottawa
Spray polyurethane foam (SPF), commonly known as spray foam, is an insulating foam that is spray-applied as a liquid and then expands to many times its liquid volume to insulate and seal every crack, gap and void it is applied to. It can cut thermal and energy charges by up to 50%. Spray foam has been in use for more than 30 years and keeps growing in popularity because it is an effective insulator that also stops air leakage.
Spray foam insulation is a chemical product made from two materials, isocyanate and polyol resin. When the two are mixed at the spray nozzle, the result expands up to 30 to 60 times its original liquid volume. Beyond its insulating capacity, it creates an airtight seal within the structure so no air can enter or escape. It is used to insulate roofs, attics, walls, floors and much more.
Open-cell foam is light and flexible because of the nature of its structure. As it cures, the gas inside each cell escapes through gaps in the cell walls, leaving a foam that is soft and elastic. Open-cell spray foam can expand up to 100 times its original size to block every nook and cranny in the building. It is typically more affordable because it uses less synthetic material, it is an excellent air barrier, and it is very often used to insulate interior walls because it limits outdoor noise intrusion. It is rated at about R-3.7 per inch and is not recommended for outdoor applications such as foam roofing.
Closed-cell foam insulation is denser and harder than open-cell. It produces a solid exterior that is more resistant to temperature change, and it serves as an air barrier, water barrier and vapour retarder in a single application. By keeping out unwanted outside air and water, homeowners can enjoy comfort without worrying about outside allergens or mould growth from moisture buildup. Closed-cell foam delivers the highest R-value per inch (about R-6 per inch), adds structural strength and is the right choice for crawl spaces and areas with high moisture content in the air.
Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation
- Flexibility: spray foam works for virtually every exposed surface, including walls, ceilings, basements, crawl spaces and attics.
- Structural value: spray foam adds to the basic integrity of your home.
- High R-value: the higher the R-value, the more resistant a material is to thermal exchange, and spray polyurethane foam has a high R-value.
- Multi-level barrier: spray foam serves as an air barrier as well as a sound barrier.
- Moisture reduction: condensation and dampness can cause mould growth and water damage, which spray foam insulation protects against.
Insulation FAQ
Is spray foam a good fit for Ontario buildings?
Yes. Spray foam insulates and air seals in one application, which is what a Ontario building needs across both heating and cooling season.
How much does insulation cost?
It depends on the material, the depth your project needs and the area covered. Every estimate is free, written and itemized before any work begins.
Can you insulate an existing building?
Yes. Retrofit work is most of what we do: old material comes out where needed, air leaks get sealed, and the new insulation goes in at a measured depth.
Will insulation help reduce energy loss?
A continuous air seal cuts the leakage that drives most heating and cooling loss, so sealed buildings hold their temperature with less equipment run time.
How long does installation take?
Most residential projects are done in a single day. Larger or multi-area projects are quoted with a schedule up front.
